BASI (British Association of Snowsport Instructors) is a UK-based international training and grading provider for professional snowsport instructing and coaching qualifications. They provide a teaching pathway for six snowsports disciplines including: Alpine skiing, Snowbaording, Adaptive, Telemark, Nordic and Coaching. BASI has 6,000 Members, and those Members teach in over 38 countries worldwide. It was founded in 1963 to meet the growing demand for snowsports as it developed in the early 60’s in the Scottish hills. Now, BASI delivers courses year round in the UK and overseas and its qualifications are recognised internationally by the International Ski Instructors Association (ISIA).

BASI takes advanced snowsport enthusiasts, using a step by step progression, through an award system which meets market needs and both national and international requirements.

Internationally Recognised Training
Qualifying through the BASI system allows instructors to achieve international recognition and work professionally both in the UK and abroad.

BASI runs a comprehensive calendar of training courses at artificial ski slopes, indoor ski centres and snow centres here in the UK, as well as all year round in Europe and in the Southern Hemisphere.

BASI takes advanced snowsport enthusiasts, using a step by step progression, through an award system which meets market needs and both national and international requirements.

Aspiring instructors can enter the coaching pathway by initiallysigning up for a BASI training course, then developing individual skills and abilities to progress to advanced levels where they can earn a living from becoming a full-time instructor.

BASI delivers courses in six different disciplines, with various qualifications available for each level:

  • Alpine: Ski qualifications designed to ensure easy recognition of each qualification and easier employability.
  • Snowboard: A snowboard training and qualification system that will assist members to find employment world-wide.
  • Telemark: The oldest form of skiing with a twist – the new equipment.
  • Nordic: The dynamic and challenging sport of Cross-country skiing, performed in both Classic and Skating techniques.
  • Adaptive: These demanding courses are designed to equip ski instructors with the specific skills required to teach skiers with disabilities.
  • Coaching: The UKCP coaching pathway is specifically aimed at those snowsportsenthusisats who are interested in becoming involved in competitive performance coaching from youth programmes to national team athletes.

Courses include lesson planning, personal performance, technical workshops and on/off hill video feedback. The annually published BASI Course Directory provides all the information on each course syllabus.
