If you’re interested in the idea of an apprenticeship, then West Ham United Foundation are looking to find talented people who don’t necessarily get a chance through other pathways or major firms. Sound like you? Read on…

A ground-breaking Leadership Through Sport and Business (LTSB) programme is helping West Ham United Foundation to tackle unemployment in east London.

The apprenticeship programme reaches young people who employers may otherwise struggle to find. Supported by Newham College and the West Ham United Foundation, one group of apprentices, for example, studied with Newham College for their level two AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) qualification and then spent a year on a placement at prestigious city firms.

They then acquired and developed their knowledge of accountancy, while simultaneously growing their leadership skills through the FA Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Football and FA Mentoring courses, in addition to a refereeing masterclass.

Each young person has since been working as an apprentice accountant with one of Leadership Through Sport’s many blue chip partner organisations, who provide experience and a platform for them to advance.

Leadership Through Sports & Business
If you’re an aspiring accountant or business leader, then this two-year programme, now entering its sixth year, is looking to help you with a life-changing accountancy apprenticeship programme.

The programme looks to develop you both personally and professionally, and prepare you for the business world. You start with a four-month pre-apprenticeship training programme that will include a Sports Leaders Award, Refereeing Award, AAT Level 2 and a host of employability skills and exclusive experiences, which prepare you for your Level 3 Accountancy apprenticeship.

Last year, the programme placed young people in firms such as Grant Thornton, RSM and NEX plc – this year, you can take the first steps towards an amazing and profitable career!

  • Are you 16-21 years old, and hungry for an opportunity in a major firm?
  • Are you interested in a career in business and finance?
  • Have you got the ability, but just need the chance to show it?
  • Have you got at least 5+ GCSEs at C and above, with minimum Bs in Maths and English?

Every single trainee has an east London postcode and so it is absolutely our community that will see the fruits of this exciting enterprise,” says WHU Vice Chairman Karren Brady. “For us, it is wholly unacceptable that local youngsters grow up within earshot of a flourishing Canary Wharf and yet, too often, are effectively worlds apart. We are, little by little, changing that.”
