Intermediate Level Apprenticeship
Could an apprenticeship suit your career aspirations?
Meet Josh Hibberd, 20, a duty manager at Fareham Leisure Centre, who not only completed his own Intermediate Level Apprenticeship but who has since been nominated for the Apprentice of the Year Award in the 2013 Lifetime Learner Achievement Awards.
After nine months working with his dad on a building site Josh decided that his talent was not in the building trade and that it was time for a career change. With a passion for football and keeping fit, the logical step was to research jobs within the leisure industry where he could share his passion with others.
Just one visit to the job centre led to a six-month Intermediate Level Apprenticeship in Active Leisure and Operational services at Fareham Leisure Centre run by Everyone Active in partnership with training provider Lifetime Training, who now have over 300 apprentices in the active leisure sector.
“At the end of my Intermediate Level Apprenticeship I secured a part-time position in the operational side of the business and was offered a full-time role shortly afterwards. A year later I was promoted to team leader, which required me to work shifts as a duty manager overseeing the running of the centre. I am currently still in the role, managing a team of four and continuing to progress within the organisation,” explains Josh.
Josh’s work ethic and success were recognised by Everyone Active and Lifetime Training who nominated Josh for the Lifetime Learner Achievement Awards. “I nominated Josh for Apprentice of the Year as I was really impressed with his enthusiasm and clear potential to succeed in the leisure industry,” explains Nick Reiter, senior employment and placement coordinator at Lifetime Training. “Throughout his apprenticeship his passion and drive really shone through. Josh was eager to secure a role that would provide him, not only a nationally-recognised qualification from Lifetime Training, but also the experience and understanding he could gain through an apprenticeship with Everyone Active”.
Upon hearing of his nomination Josh has been over the moon and even more determined in his role. “I love working at Fareham Leisure Centre and the opportunities they have given me, so I was absolutely thrilled to hear that I had been nominated for the award. It just makes me want to work even harder!” he explains.
“We have been extremely pleased with how quickly Josh has excelled at Fareham Leisure Centre. We wish him the best of luck with the awards and look forward to watching him progress in his career,” says Harvey Gosling, group training manager from Everyone Active.
