Introduction

Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby (GBWR)

GBWR is the national governing body for the game of wheelchair rugby in England, Scotland, and Wales, is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee and is a full member of World Wheelchair Rugby (WWR) and of the British Paralympic Association (BPA). GBWR also operates a subsidiary, GBWR Trading Limited, which manages GBWR’s commercial opportunities and sponsorship.

GBWR Trading Limited are the organisation responsible for the successful delivery of two major wheelchair rugby events; 2023 World Wheelchair Rugby European Championship Division A and 2022 Wheelchair Rugby Quadnations as outlined below. This role would be contracted to GBWR Trading Limited and work across both events.

2023 World Wheelchair Rugby European Championship Division A

GBWR, who claimed a historic gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games this summer, has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2023 World Wheelchair Rugby European Championship Division A. As Great Britain enjoys unprecedented success in wheelchair rugby, the vision for the event is clear – to deliver the best European Championships ever! This will be achieved not just by producing the ultimate experience for athletes, fans, volunteers and partners but by creating a legacy of more people playing, volunteering and supporting the high impact, adrenaline-packed game.

The event will be held in the iconic Principality Stadium in Cardiff from 3-7 May 2023 and will act as a qualifier for the Paralympic Games in Paris 2024. The top 8 ranked European teams will take part with both finalists automatically qualifying for Paris, in front of a passionate rugby-loving crowd in Cardiff and the event will also be live broadcast to showcase wheelchair rugby to a much broader audience.

2022 Wheelchair Rugby Quadnations

GBWR is also hosting their annual Wheelchair Rugby Quadnations event again in 2022, from 14-18 September and taking place in Cardiff is perfectly positioned to build awareness of wheelchair rugby in the city ahead of the European Championship the following year.

Quadnations is a four-team international tournament involving Paralympic Champions Great Britain and three other leading nations in the sport. The format of the tournament is a group stage and then finals day and with the return of spectators for 2022, promises to be a spectacle of high-quality wheelchair rugby competition. It is intended the event will be fully live-streamed for its duration, opening up the sport to a wider audience than just those inside the venue.

Role salary and benefits

The project fee available for this role is £18,000 to include expenses. The associated event budget will cover any event time expenses separate to this project fee.

This is a fixed-term contract role, for a self-employed individual or agency. The successful candidate will be fully responsible for any income tax, VAT liability, National Insurance and social security contributions.

The base location of the successful candidate is flexible but there will be a requirement to be based in or around Cardiff at an agreed point prior to and during the Championships and there will be regular meetings in the city from now until the event.

The role will start in May 2022 with completion around May 2023. The number of days/hours worked will be based on the delivery plan agreed between the Event Director and the successful candidate.
