Hours of Work: Hours are set to meet the needs of the business but are a minimum of 37.5 hours per week

A fantastic opportunity has arisen at our Club for a Lead Psychologist to join the Academy department. Responsibilities are as follows:


  • Communicate and promote the Academy culture creating an elite environment for the development of young players.
  • Have consistently high standards.
  • Communicate and engage with parents/guardians where appropriate.
  • Attend all professional development events.
  • Actively engage in a fully functioning competency framework and integrated appraisal process.
  • Monitor the wellbeing of Academy players at all times liaising with the Safeguarding Services Manager.


  • To create a psychological service which reflects the focused and strategic direction of the Academy values.
  • Effectively communicating to all relevant stakeholders internally – including BCFC Academy Manager, Head Coach, Assistant Coaches, multi-disciplinary service leads, Education/Safeguarding and externally, including key stakeholders that support the provision on an ad hoc basis.


  • Ensure the delivery of timely psychological support, including meeting the needs of the Head Coach, Assistant Coaches/Players and multi-disciplinary support staff.
  • To lead the provision of individual/group-based performance psychology intervention with players/staff measuring actions and impact on performance and wellbeing.
  • Effectively highlight standards and club values whilst enhancing the identity of the psychology department.
  • Design, clearly position and deliver practical interventions that develops players ability to perform successfully on and off the pitch and integrates a holistic understanding of player and staff wellbeing.
  • Contribute where appropriate to the Academy departments using evidence-based research and applied practice to enhance the position, profile and understanding of Psychology.
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive and comprehensible contemporaneous records of professional interactions.


Academic Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • Post graduate level in Psychology or Sport Psychology and be BPS chartered, HCPC registered or working towards HCPC registration as a Psychologist.

Desirable Requirements

  • FA Safeguarding.
  • Can speak multiple languages.


Essential Requirements

  • Extensive experience working as an applied psychologist with footballers/high performance athletes and staff in a club/international setting.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience of working in a busy, pressurised environment outside 9 to 5 hours regularly.
  • Experience of working at a football Academy within and Education & Player Care role.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential Requirements

  • Able to lead on strategic development of a Psychology department within a MDT in a high pressured environment.
  • Implement strategies to help clients overcome difficulties, improve performance or realise potential.
  • Proven ability in maintaining effective relationships with players, coaches, MDT’s and other service leads.
  • Skilled in assessment and establishment of agreed outcomes with clients; formulation of needs/problems; intervention or implementation of solutions; evaluation of outcomes; and reporting and reflecting on outcomes.
  • Deals with complex information and manages multiple perspectives under pressure.
  • Grounded knowledge and applied skills using evidence based and evidence informed psychological frameworks.

Desirable Requirements

  • Demonstrates a complex understanding of self in the context of others (e.g. biases and countertransference).
  • Maintains a high degree of professionalism by demonstrating emotional regulation and reflecting on others emotional states in emotive settings / under pressure.
  • Regular reflection and application of learning from a structured, and targeted approach to CPD.
  • Pro-actively elicits, monitors, evaluates and acts on feedback, ensuring openness at all times.
  • Pro-actively integrates all supervision structures to maximize practical gains in skills and application of theory.
  • Effectively works with colleagues to develop a shared view of the objectives of department work, recognising and respecting the common purpose of the Academy.
  • Able to share formulations and use interpersonal skills to assist multi-disciplinary communication and understanding.
  • Demonstrates effective questioning skills to positively influence understanding and challenge perceptions.

Personal Requirements

  • Effectively uses interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) in a manner that addresses and overcomes resistance to engagement, and barriers in understanding, of psychological service delivery.
  • Plans their own workload whilst remaining flexible to take into account the needs of the dept/others.
  • Collaborates effectively across multiple interfaces keeping the focus of contribution on delivering and improving provision.

Terms of Appointment

  • 37.5 hours per week.
  • 20 days annual leave (rising by 1 day per completed year of service, up to a maximum of 25 days, plus 8 statutory bank holidays)
  • 6-month probation period.

Special Conditions

  • Flexibility with working hours required to meet demands of the role.
  • Under the Disclosure and Barring Service and in accordance with the Club’s own rules regarding Safeguarding the post-holder will be required to meet minimum criteria regarding Safeguarding and a Disclosure and Barring Check will be required in this post. Exceptions Order to Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 applies.
