The role

A exciting opportunity has become available for a resilient and empathetic Head of Safeguarding at a pivotal time of transition and change for Burnley Football Club.

The successful candidate will create, lead and implement the delivery of the strategic safeguarding framework across all Burnley FC operations (including Burnley FC in the Community) and provide support, guidance and direction in safeguarding and child protection processes.

Role expectations

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Head of Safeguarding will be expected to:

  • Promote and protect the rights of children and adults with care needs who come into contact with any of our Club activities or operations.
  • Work within all relevant statutory and non-statutory local legal and regulatory frameworks providing leadership and support in the ongoing delivery and improvement of our robust and effective safeguarding framework.
  • Create, coordinate and deliver a safeguarding training programme that ensures all staff, volunteers and all BFC workforce understand their role and obligations to safeguard children and adults with care needs.
  • Ensure that parents and supporters understand their roles in safeguarding and know how to report any concerns they may have.
  • Work closely with the HR department to coordinate and support the Safer Recruitment Policy and overseeing and completing the DBS vetting protocols for relevant roles and undertake any necessary risk assessments for content.
  • Oversee our house parenting provision for our Academy Players to ensure that we are fully compliant with BFC policy and local authority private fostering legislation.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure reporting systems are managed, used appropriately and that Head of Safeguarding oversees all case closures with another member of the safeguarding team and that all data held fully complies with GDPR regulations.
  • Manage the safeguarding team ensuring that the safeguarding provision is first class and providing quality reflective supervisions.
  • Attend all first team home games as the safeguarding lead in attendance at every game.
  • Provide monthly reports to the Board of the Club and take any actions from the Board and implement into practice.
  • Establish positive, supportive relationships with external agencies including LADO, Police, FA and Premier League Safeguarding Team.
  • Lead and make all relevant preparations to ensure externals audits continue with positive results.
  • Be able to work flexible hours where the role of the job requires.
  • Comply with all Club policies.
  • Promote the Burnley Football Club brand and ethos in a professional, strong and positive manner.

An ideal candidate will have;


  • Degree level education in a relevant area with a safeguarding element.
  • Significant experience of safeguarding and investigating concerns.
  • Excellent knowledge of statutory child protection and early intervention.
  • Detailed understanding of Safer Recruitment and DBS process and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to quickly build trust and relationships.
  • Ability to demonstrate empathy when dealing with challenging situations.
  • Experience in writing reports or compiling case information.
  • Experience in managing people, leading meetings projects and events.
  • Experience of developing and implementing policies and procedures.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to multitask.
  • Resilience with the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • A friendly, positive ‘can do’ and courteous attitude.


  • FA Safeguarding qualification.
  • Previous experience of working in a professional sports environment and the safeguarding structure.
  • Knowledge of Academy processes and procedures to ensure the needs of the players are kept at the centre of decision making.
  • An ability to influence those around you, professionally negotiate for positive outcomes.
