We are looking for an ambitious Head of Media Relations, to join our Digital, Marketing and Communications team. You’ll join at an exciting time as we have just launched our new 10-year strategy Uniting the Movement, and you’ll work on our award-winning campaigns including This Girl Can.

You’ll have senior press and public relations experience, be passionate about making a real difference to people’s lives and be ready to create and deliver a media relations strategy integral in promoting our expertise, programmes and campaigns to help get the nation active.

Day to day, you’ll oversee the press office and will work with the Strategic Lead for Communications to drive a coordinated approach to Sport England’s PR activity, ensuring alignment to the organisation’s strategic objectives.

The Head of Media relations role is to help build Sport England’s reputation as the leader in the sector, showcase the benefits of sport and physical activity so we can inspire more people to be active, and influence policy and decision makers to consider physical activity as a key driver of health and societal benefits and tackle the inequalities that exist within who takes part. In line with our ambitious strategy, we are seeking media coverage on topics such as health, active environments, education and travel as well as sport. Come join us.

Role Purpose

The Head of Media Relations will help create and deliver a media relations strategy that plays a vital role in promoting Sport England’s expertise, programmes and campaigns to help the nation get active, including the award-winning This Girl Can campaign. The post-holder will use PR to showcase the benefits of sport and physical activity so we can inspire more people to be active, and influence policy and decision makers to consider physical activity as a key driver of health and societal benefits.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience of working in a senior press and public relations role or as a journalist in a major organisation.
  • Proven track record of successfully delivering targeted, creative consumer media campaigns that generate coverage and impact on people’s behaviours.
  • Proven track record of successfully developing strategic media partnerships and targeted media and stakeholder campaigns that improve the reputation of the organisation.
  • Line manager experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with a proven track record of interpreting complex information and data and translating it into messages that are appropriate for different target audiences, including consumer audiences
  • A proven ability to build and maintain critical business relationships, network and influence at a senior level.
  • Proven track record of effective crisis media management – with the ability to make difficult judgements under pressure within a politically sensitive environment.
  • Proven ability to manage and plan multiple communications projects effectively and in line with organisational objectives.

Desirable

  • A relevant degree or professional qualifications in public relations and/or journalism.
  • Understanding of the sporting landscape in England.
  • Advanced IT skills and substantial experience of relevant media databases.
  • Previous experience of collating and evaluating media coverage.
  • Previous experience of working in a politically sensitive environment.
  • Previous experience working within an integrated communications function, at senior level.
