The role

We are now looking to recruit to the role of Duty Manager (Gym and Fitness).

Role expectations

Reporting to Head of Facilities the Duty Manager (Gym and Fitness) will be expected to:

  • Provide robust operational management of the Leisure Box.
  • Manage gym, fitness and dance Instructors and promote a positive work-place culture and environment.
  • Create a range of membership offers and packages including corporate membership to promote health and well-being for all ages and abilities.
  • Work closely with the Marketing and Events Officer and the Health and Wellbeing Coordinator to promote membership and well-being packages to the local community.
  • Deliver gym induction sessions and ensure that all customers know how to safely and effectively use equipment.
  • Effectively demonstrate, observe and evaluate members to ensure they have a safe operational knowledge of the gym and its equipment.
  • Be responsible for advice and support to customers, including the directing of activities for users to prevent injury, misuse or damage to facilities.
  • Maintain and process information using both computerised and manual records.
  • Working closely with the Leisure Box Management team to ensure that the Leisure Box operates within agreed income and expenditure budgets across all areas of the operation.
  • Ensure that the highest standard of customer service is delivered at all times.
  • Be responsible for the Health and Safety of all staff and visitors and to be the main first aider while on duty.
  • Supervise or undertake equipment set up and take downs according to the programme of activities.
  • Provide inductions and training to new staff as well as refresher training to existing staff members.
  • Be responsible (on rotation) for opening and closing the Leisure Box carrying out security and safeguarding checks.
  • Ensure compliance with all financial procedures as well as being responsible for the reconciliation and banking of income.
  • Effectively deal with customer complaints and queries and aim to reduce or eliminate escalation of complaints with the support of the Operations Manager.
  • Be able to work a range of shifts within a set Rota pattern that will include evenings and weekends as well as work on Bank Holidays.
  • To be responsible for the recruitment, training and performance of the team.
  • Promote the Burnley Football Club in the Community and Burnley Football Club brand and ethos in a professional, strong and positive manner.
  • Understand and implement the Charity’s Safeguarding policy, procedures, and best practice guidelines in your role.
  • Hold a commitment to equality and diversity in the workplace and a willingness to undertake all relevant equality and diversity training.

An ideal candidate will have;


  • Degree level qualification or comparable experience.
  • Qualified to at least Level 2 Gym Instructor
  • Commercially astute.
  • A strong operational background in a similar field such as managing a gym or leisure centre.
  • Experience of managing staff.


  • Health and Safety qualification.
  • First aid certificate.
  • Fire Marshal certificate
  • Experience of managing projects.
  • Experience in optimising revenue and overall business performance.
